  Conjuration
Translated by Jon Levitow (2009)

Oh you bright essences
who fall upon the path like late May blossoms,
who bind up things past
with the next day’s distant shore;
you who swarm in the basement below
and in the golden Tamuz1 heat above,
who hide in the painted folds of old pictures,
and you who cling to the breasts of young mothers;
you who scarcely tremble
like the hands on time’s great clock;
you who ride on a lonely tree
in the middle of a distant field;
you who gaze through the moon’s purple pane
toward that old mystic, the sightless forest;
you who travel on the back of a dove
and can turn a curse into favor;
you whose fragrance
is like the scent of the wind by the river –
here I am, here I stand,
here I wait for you.

איר, וואָס פֿאַלט ווי בליטן סוף מייַ אויפֿן שטעג ;
מיט דעם איבערמאָרגנס ווייַטן ברעג ;
און דריקט זיך צו ברוסטן פֿון יונגע מאַמעס ;
ווי הויכע ווייַזערס אויפֿן זייגער פֿון דער צייַט ;
אין מיטן פֿעלד העט ווייַט ;
צום בלינדן וואַלד, דעם אַלטן בעל–קבלה ;
און וואָס פֿאַרוואַנדלט אין גענאָד אַ קללה ;
