Translated by Miriam Leberstein (2010)
Before a bare cross
in the middle of a field,
a peasant woman hides her face in her hands
and bows her head.
Her two braids,
blond, undone,
are dying
like two doves,
slaughtered
by Stach’s two red hands.

Note (Ed.): Stach, pronounced Stukh, is the familiar form of the Polish name Stanisław. |
